In the last week of November,
the studio held a three day workshop in Japanese bookbinding.
The students and I discussed
the various Japanese Binding names and terms and the confusion caused by
various misunderstandings of scholars during the last century. For example, one
style of binding is called different names and some different styles of binding
are called the same name. To my knowledge, there are four authentic books on Japanese
Bookbinding published in Japan.
One of the books that has been translated into English is “Japanese Book
Binding” by Kojiro Ikegami. It is well known to the Western bookbinding
society.

The authors are all true master
craftsman and three have worked in the Imperial Bindery in Japan. Two books,
recently published, are in accordance with research undertaken with old
documents. Therefore the information may be considered to be historically
correct. However, some of the binding names are not commonly used or well known
even for experienced people working with the book. Of the four books I have
mentioned only one has been translated into English, it is a shame that the
three others have not, as yet, been translated. The information contained is
based on in depth study and sheds new light on various aspects of Japanese
bookbinding. Old habits die hard, I suspect that many people will still use
names and terminology, that in the light of recent research is considered not
100% accurate. Attitudes will not change over night. Below is a list of the
various names and terms that the authors of the four books use for common book
names.

その時の会話で、この１世紀の間に起こった和装本の名称の混乱についての話をしました。
一つの様式の本が異なった名称で呼ばれており、また異なる様式の本が同じ名称で呼ばれています。私の知るところでは、本格的な和装本について書かれた本が日本では４冊出版されています。このうち１冊 英語に翻訳されている「本のつくり方」は、西洋の製本の世界では良く知られているものです。

これらの４冊の本の著者は、本当の名匠で３名の方は宮内庁書陵部でお勤めされていた方々です。最近出版された２冊の本は、近年の調査にもとづいているので、歴史的にはこの読み方は正しいはずです。しかし、本の世界に携わっている人々にとっても、いままで良く知られていた名称とは異なるのでまだ一般認識されずに使われていません。
すでに述べましたが、この４冊のうち英語に翻訳されているのは１冊のみで、残念なことに新しい資料はまだ翻訳されていません。これらの情報は、深い調査にもとづいており和装本の様々な面に光明を投じることと思いますが、古い習慣はすぐにはなくならず、この名称で一般に認識されるようになるにはまだまだ時間がかかるでしょう。
