Sir John Soane’s Museum and DB AGM

It was miserable weather on the last weekend of April. However, I had a good day out on Saturday.

One of my friends recommended the Sir John Soane’s Museum in Holborn. Sir John Soane (1753-1837) was a 19^th century architect. The museum is his former house and has displayed his exceptional collections.

The Designer Bookbinders Annual General Meeting was held at the Art Workers Guild in Holborn on the Saturday afternoon, so I visited this museum before going to the DB AGM. The Museum fronts on to Lincoln’s Inn Fields and it takes only 15minitus walk form there to Art Workers Guild. However, the top floor of the museum has limited opening times, unfortunately I could not stay in the museum until the top floor was open to the public. It is a remarkable museum and I would like to visit again to see the top floor. There is subtle suggestion that as for all chairs in the museum, a dry flower (fruit ?) is put at the seat therefore a visitor cannot sit down. It is organic and a nice device to keep people off the seats. It’s prohibited to take photographs in the museum. So, it is a shame that I could not show images on this blog.

Following the AGM business, the invited lecturer was Mr. Christopher Brown who is illustrator Printmaker & Artist, senior lecturer in Graphic Arts at Liverpool School of Art and design and visiting lecturer in Fashion Menswear at Central St Martins and in MA illustration at Camberwell College of Atrs. His works have been exhibited widely including Royal Academy, V&A etc. His lecture was very interesting and I really enjoyed it. I also had a nice lunch in the café of Lincoln’s Inn Fields. The location of the café is wonderful and food and coffee was good. So, the last Saturday of April was bad weather, but it was civilised day for me.

４月の最後の週末は惨めなお天気でしたが、私は土曜日にとても良い外出ができました。

友人の一人がホルボーンにあるサー・ジョン・ソーンズ美術館のことを紹介してくれました。サー・ジョン・ソーンズ(1753-1837)は１９世紀の建築家で、かつて彼の邸宅であった建物を美術館にして彼の珍しいコレクションを展示しています。デザイナー・ブックバインダーズの恒例年次会議が土曜日の午後にホルボーンのアート・ワーカズ・ギルドで行われるのでその会議の前にこの美術館を訪ねることにしました。美術館はリンカンズ・イン・フィールドに面しており、そこからアート・ワーカズ・ギルドまでは徒歩で１５分ほどです。美術館の最上階は限られた時間しか開いていなくて、残念ながら私は最上階の開室時間まで美術館に止まることが出来ませんでした。素晴らしい美術館なので最上階を見にまた行きたいと思っています。美術館にあるすべての椅子の座にはドライ・フラワー（もしかしたら植物の実）が置かれていて訪問者が座れないよう繊細な配慮がされていました。

人を椅子から遠ざけるようにする自然な工夫でした。美術館内での撮影は一切禁止でこのブログで画像をご紹介できないのは残念です。その代わり、ガイド・ブックからの美術館の画像をいくつかご紹介します。この美術館についての詳細については上記上段のサイトをご覧ください。

恒例年次会議の用事の後は講演会がありました。講師はクリストファー・ブラウン氏で、イラストレーター、版画家、アーティストとして、リバプール美術学校の先任講師、セントラル・セント・マーティン男性ファッションとカンバウェル・カレッジ・オブ・アーツの大学院イラストレーションの外部講師として活躍されておられます。彼の仕事はロイヤル・アカデミー、ヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館を含め様々な所で幅広く紹介されています。彼の講演はとても興味深く、十分楽しむことができました。講演後のクリストファー氏との短い会話のやり取りで彼のイラストの製品が日本のビームスでも購入することができることがわかりました。クリストファー・ブラウン氏の詳細に関しては、上記下段のサイトをご覧ください。

その日は、リンカンズ・イン・フィールドにあるカフェでお昼をとりました。カフェは素敵な場所にありコヒーも食事も良かったです。

４月最後の土曜日は悪いお天気でしたが、私にとっては文化的な一日でした。
